Midlands’ first black MP wins seat once held by Enoch Powell


A hospital theatre nurse has become the West Midlands’ first African Caribbean MP after winning the seat once held by Conservative MP Enoch Powell.
Eleanor Smith, a Labour activist who became the first-ever black woman president of the trade union Unison in 2011, won Wolverhampton South West with 20,899 votes, 49 per cent of ballots cast.
